Good with Computers? Consider a Degree in Information Technology

Are you good with computers? Have you thought about pursuing a degree in information technology (IT)?

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, IT is one of the fastest-growing career paths out there, projected to grow by 17 percent in the next decade. And why shouldn’t it be? Computers are a part of everyday life, running nearly everything we come in contact with. As such, IT must be running at 100 percent all the time; we need IT professionals to make this possible.

While some on-the-job-training is always necessary, and you’ll learn the specific needs of your employers while in their service, a degree in information technology can open the door to these opportunities. A few examples of the career opportunities available to individuals with an information technology degree are:

  • Computer software engineers: Design and develop software
  • Computer programmers: Write programs
  • Computer system analysts: Use IT tools to help businesses achieve their goals; an example would be the design and development of a computer system
  • Computer support specialists: Provide technical assistance, support, and advice to businesses and individuals

If any of these jobs sounds like something you’d be interested in pursuing, research IT degree programs. In this computer-related field, a bachelor’s degree is highly preferred for entry-level positions and most often required for any management position.
